The Pennine Explorer |
<<< Back |
Staying in a fine hotel on the edge of the Pennines, this holiday features two very different journeys through the hills and moors of North Yorkshire. Reminders of a bygone age when travel was altogether slower, sit back, relax and watch the dramatic landscape unfold from the comfort of a train and a canal barge.

for dinner. |
| Day 2 |
Our excursion today takes us to Appleby to join the Carlisle –
Settle railway, sit back and enjoy the wonderful scenery of the
Pennines. |
| Day 3 |
Today we join the Leeds Liverpool Canal, a truly fascinating
waterway. What better way to discover it than onboard a
beautiful traditional canal boat. During the hour long trip, the
skipper unravels the captivating 200 year old tale of the canal
while passing through spectacular scenery, mill buildings and
the many swing bridges. |
| Day 4 |
We travel today to Pendle Hill, the historical relevance of
Pendle Hill gives it a bleak and eerie quality. It was used as a
burial ground in the Bronze age and a 7,000 year old burial
mound can be found on the top. More recently in the 17th
century the events which led to the hanging of the Pendle
Witches took place. We will then travel to Oswaldtwistle Mill
before returning to our hotel. |

We return home to arrive early evening. |
